Theatre Against the Audience

The Zoo Story & The Story of the Last Bus

Staged at the Bruce Gorden Theatre-IPAC

 07' September 26-29 8:15 pm

As part of the Merrigong Theatre Company Independent Producers Program

This project started with a development process in 2006 as part of the Merrigong Theatre Development Program in which the existing English translation of The Story of the Last Bus by the Stage Theatre Group in Sri Lanka was refined. Dhananjaya worked with actor, director and cross cultural theatre worker, Phillip Hinton for few months on the script.

This new version of the script was then read by actor Nicholas Brown to an invited audience. The idea of producing The Story of ther Last Bus as a double bill with Edward Albee’s The Zoo Story  came in 2005 and it was this development in 2006 which encouraged Dhananjaya to realize the idea in 2007.

Zen Zen Zo Physical Theatre Workshop

Zen Zen Zo is a Brisbane-based physical theatre company that recaptures the ritualistic power of theatre by combining a striking visual and physical style with raw energy and emotional truth. Zen Zen Zo has gained a reputation for creating innovative, confronting and often controversial theatre experiences which both excite and challenge its audiences.

This workshop covers two of the training styles used by Zen Zen Zo to train their actors and create their productions: The Suzuki Method of Actor training from Japan; and Viewpoints, a style developed by renowned American director, Anne Bogart.
Participants are taken through a fascinating minefield of challenging actor-training techniques that work toward fusing body, voice, mind & spirit. This training cultivates the performer’s physical energy, vocal quality & range, concentration, ensemble awareness and imagination and introduces participants to the peak performance attitude necessary to become a great performing artist.

The Society of Histrionic Happenings Cows on Crown Walking Tour
directed by Anne-Louise Rentell
(
Dhananjaya as a performer)

The Cows on Crown Walking Tour took place as part of the Viva la Gong Festival in Wollongong on 6 October 2007.  The tour took the audience to four different sites within the city's CBD which were either once vaudeville theatre/cinema locations or sites of interest with regards to the history of the performing arts in Wollongong. At each site was a performance that related to that particular history. Audience members joined a herd of cows that were herded up throughout the tour.

Blasted Memories

This exhibition included 28 pieces of painting and installations Dhananjaya has been creating over the last few years.

This exhibition was presented by the Faculty of Arts of the University of Wollongong at its Long Gallery from 5th – 28th of May in 2004.

Dhananjaya has been searching for his own method of expression using visual materials, many of the pieces were experimental works. The main theme was the ‘romantic’ memories of a man from a war zone.
