Synopsis
A very fat middle aged millionaire jogs in the evening to lose weight. His newly appointed servant, Daasa, a very thin and poor middle aged man, whose job is to look after the master, runs with him carrying the boss’s towel, the bottle of water etc. The play starts with the boss blaming Daasa for overtaking him instead of running behind him. First Daasa keeps silent but after sometime Daasa says that he can’t run behind him anymore for the salary paid to him. When the master asks why, Daasa says that if he runs behind he would have to inhale all the ill-smelling farts emanating from the master’s behind. The master says NO, if he did that Daasa would have found another fault in him, so increasing his pay would never end. First Daasa’s reaction seems to be quite radical that he is going to leave the boss, and then the master somehow manages to keep him saying he would consider raising his salary. Daasa explains to the boss how miserable his life is, that he has to feed a wife and six children with this salary. The boss too explains to Daasa how miserable his life is, that he is advised by the doctor to keep running and to eat like a beggar. After these arguments the boss agrees to add another 100 rupees to Daasa’s salary. First Daasa says, that wouldn’t be enough at all but as always happens the boss somehow manages to get Daasa to agree. Then Daasa asks the boss when his Rs100 would be added. The boss says,” in a few days, just after the war is over”. Daasa gets angry and is going to leave the boss again. The boss says the war is about to end and he would then start some new business so that he could double Daasa’s salary; all Daasa has to do is to wait for a few days until the war ends. At this point, Daasa is given a choice: if Daasa wants the Rs100 raised immediately it could be done even today or if Daasa wants his salary doubled he would have to wait for a few days until the war ends. Daasa thinks it over and says that he would prefer to wait. Now, as they have been running quite long Daasa looks tired and can hardly run any further. The Boss gives him money to buy shoes and a suite from a nearby shop which would make Daasa more comfortable and help him do the job more efficiently. With those privileges granted, Daasa thinks the boss is kind to him and decides to work for the master as long as he can in expectation that his life would change soon. The play ends like this” Dasa: Sir, will the war end soon? Boss:Of course, very soon Daasa.
